At least thirteen people killed and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's strategic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both rail lines was managed by the army, marking a significant expansion of its duties in national works. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen two non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition demanded an prompt halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This halt was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in full compliance with all operational standards. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
