Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by law enforcement.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were defaced, sometimes with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Police state they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located multiple other smeared vehicles and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement state initial examinations show the fluid was likely human blood.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are not yet cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they stated.
Municipal representatives stated they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for tips.
A high-ranking political figure said the attack left him without words and had to be resolved promptly.
"This incident hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the pain of the far-right attack in 2020," he stated on a platform, referring to the death of nine people by a shooter aiming at individuals of migrant background in five years prior.
