Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was required to halt operations for hours when dozens of them floated into the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the Belarusian boundary.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and participants so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
