People who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have expressed fresh optimism following their first meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

The board president, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the Pope's decision to meet with them so early in his leadership sent a strong message about his commitment to addressing the problem.

Worldwide Strict Policy Advocated

The organization is pushing for a global strict approach that would permanently remove any clergy member who admits to or is proven of abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"Everyone was practical when we recognized that there is pushback," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The new Pope, who took the role in spring, has taken on this longstanding problem that has plagued the Catholic Church for decades.

Previous efforts to resolve the situation included an historic summit on child abuse within the Church and changes to church laws to explicitly criminalize abuse.

Deeply Felt Link

For the representative, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for global implementation of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist shared they were abused by a clergy member who was subsequently moved between various churches.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his papacy, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the common objective, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Significant Meeting

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and advocates from more than 30 nations, met with the Pontiff in his Vatican office.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "primarily heard to us," according to Hickey.

The Pope was characterized as "very understanding" when hearing the story of a woman abused at a church-run institution for native youth in North America.

Hickey added the leader was "tender" about their own story and seemed "modest, humorous, and very down to earth."

"Survivors have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and eager to work with us."

Church Regulations Reforms

The organization is hoping that revisions to canon law will facilitate the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled materials that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," they remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recent church-ordered document emphasized the "importance of a efficient process for the resignation and/or removal of Church leaders or staff in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The document also pointed out that victims consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and major superiors to be held accountable for negligence and cover-up."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they told the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they expressed optimism for future change.

"We realise it's not something that's going to happen overnight, but at the end of the day, coming together and building a relationship and persisting to build that relationship is a move in the right direction," they commented.

They added that they told with the pontiff: "Even though it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the story ends - he valued that."
