The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led protests that shook the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Pledge to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Electoral Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad public dissatisfaction with the nation's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago freed on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was dissolved.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of other major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that holding a credible election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
